Apron Stories!

Inspirational, Unique, Instructive and Fun

It really is possible for you to become a storyteller. This is a method that anyone can do, even if you are absolutely positive you could never tell a story. You won't spend days memorizing pages of stories. I'd never be able to do that either. It's a lot easier than that, and a lot more fun. Most of your time will be spent making little objects to use with a story, or cutting and coloring pictures, with all kinds of fun materials, as creatively as you care to get. I'll teach you all my little tricks. Besides, it's not just stories. I use the word "storytelling" very broadly, to encompass everything that I do with the Story Apron.

"Excellent Workshop! Most useful one I've ever attended, and the most enjoyable."

Learn now to "Cook up a Story"

Join me at this day long "make and take" workshop as I demonstrate nifty stories, poems, and songs using the Story Apron. I'll fill you in on all the little secrets for a creative and effective presentation of each story. You'll learn where to get ideas and  materials for your stories, and which techniques are the most interesting and fun for the children. I'll show you how Apron Stories can be applied to all areas of your curriculum, including science and math! In addition to the many demonstrations, you are provided with a substantial packet of teacher resources that will help you to prepare some stories and/or curriculum teaching units for use in your classroom or library the very next day. You will also realize that  this method can be taught to children of all ages, and they can be storytellers, too.

What is a "Story Apron"?

It looks like an apron, actually, but is made from a velcro compatible material (sometimes called veltex) to which velcro adheres. It is not felt. The apron is a bit larger than normal , because there may be lots of story pictures, or objects, to display as you read a book, tell the story, sing a song, etc. (more about that later). These aprons may be ordered at the time of registration, or purchased at the workshop, if you do not have one already. You may also order them separately.  For more information go to Buy an Apron. I also use Story Vests, Velcro compatible Books, and Boards, and sometimes child size aprons are available, especially if they are pre-ordered before the workshop date. I know the seamstress (that would be me...)

Who am I?

I've been a School Library Media Specialist (and a public librarian) in Connecticut for many years. Before I had children of my own, I was a teacher of grades one and two. In one of my first years as a librarian I attended a great workshop given by Caroline Feller Bauer, where I saw this technique for the first time. Since that day, I have used this method of storytelling successfully with all of my own students, from PreK to 6th grade. My workshops demonstrating the use of the "Story Apron" began in the 1990's. They have been presented at professional development seminars in many locations throughout the United States and at various professional conferences and conventions.
